History of Mauritius
The island of Mauritius was known by Austronesian sailors and Arab as early in 10 th century. Firs visit to Mauritius was made by Portuguese sailors in 1507 and they established visiting base leaving island uninhabited.
 

Dutch Second Fleet's three ships were sent to Spice Islands blown off the course of Nassau, Stadtholder of Netherlands. Dutch established first permanent settlement in year 1638, due to tough climatic conditions having cyclones and deterioration of settlement, Dutch abandoned island some of decades later. The France that already controlled neighboring seized Mauritius in early 1715 and renamed larter as IIe de France. Island under French rule developed prosperous economy that was based on the sugar production.

 

In Napoleonic Wars of (1803-1815), British set out there to gain control of island, although they own Battle of the Grand Port, but Napoleon's only naval victory over British, French then surrendered to British invasion at the Cap Malheureux about three months later. French surrendered formally on 3 rd December 1810, it was based on term to allow settlers to keep their property and land to use French language and the law of French I civil and criminal matters. Name of island reverted to origin Mauritius, under the British rule.

 


Mauritius was visited by Arabs Probably and Malays in Middle Ages, politics on this island was long preserve of French and creoles, but extension of franchise under 1947 constitution gave Indian political power. Leaders of India in 1950s and 60s widely favored the independence, while creoles and French wanted to continue association with the Britain. In 1965, separated Britain strategic Chagos from Mauritius, but it continues to claim island and then sought their return. Elections of 1967 gave majority in assembly to Seewoosagur's pro-independence. Independence was also granted in year 1968 and Gamgolam became first prime minister. Island joined Commonwealth of Nations and United Nations.
