Country has young educated population that is remarkable for ethnic diversity with the Mauritian of African, Indian, Chinese and European origin. It has produced brew of the languages customs and religious. Official language of Mauritius is English, almost everyone understands or speaks French or can read French newspapers, and French is also widely spoken in country.

At the end of year 2000, Mauritius population was estimated at 1,193,460, Mauritius Island, main republic island, had estimated population of around 1,157,285 while population of the Rodrigues was near 35,890. Population of republic has grown at the rate of 1.09% in year 2000 and it is against 1.15% in year 1999. Back of 1990s, estimate population of Mauritius in 1993 was 1,106,516 with population growth rate of almost 0.96% for that year. According to census in year 1990, population of country was estimated at 1,065,988, in which 34,292 lived on the Rodrigues and about 170 at outer islands.

Population density of country is more than 537 inhabitants at per square kilometer; it is one of highest in world. Majority of inhabitants in islands are young, about 58.6% of population were living under age of twenty-nine in year 1990. rate of population is country grew between 3% and 4% in 1950s, it resulted, in large part, from elimination of the malaria, improved health care and higher standard of living. Such high grew rate would impede development of island's and the tax resources. Private and government groups instituted extensive and family planning efforts. These services for family planning were centralized under administration of Child Health Care and Maternal of Ministry of Health.
